The Liberal Democrats are the second largest group on the Weymouth & Portland Borough Council. We strongly believe that local government should be by local people and for local people. Through our system of newsletters we keep you informed all year round, not just at election times, and you can contact any of us at any time.

County Council Elections

On June 4th there were elections across Dorset for the County Council. Here’s a brief summary of what happened in Weymouth & Portland.

In Tophill we didn’t field a candidate and Les Ames, the sitting Independent, was returned again.

In Portland Harbour (Underhill and Wyke Regis) the sitting Councillor, Anne Kenwood, lost to Tim Munro, the “Independent” who defected to the Tories last year, with our candidate, Trefor Morgan, a respectable third place.

In Rodwell (Weymouth West and Weymouth East) Tory Nigel Reed narrowly beat our candidate, John Birtwistle, by 107 votes. Considering that this Division has four Conservative Borough Councillors and only one Lib Dem this wasn’t a disaster by any means.

In Weymouth Town (Melcombe Regis and Westham East) the sitting member, Peter Farrell, who defected from the Lib Dems to the Conservatives, was roundly defeated by Howard Legg for the Lib Dems.

In Westham (Westham North and Westham West) Lib Dem David Harris, the former Mayor, comfortably took this former Labour seat ahead of defector Ian James.

In Broadwey (Upwey & Broadwey and Littlemoor), another former Labour seat, Tory Andy Cooke led the poll with Lib Dem Christine James in second place.

Finally, in Lodmoor (Preston and Radipole) Lib Dem Brian Ellis held on by 176 votes from former Tory MP Ian Bruce.

So Brian Ellis is now joined on the County Council by Howard Legg and David Harris. Over the whole County the Lib Dems have gained one seat.
